ARE We Saved by WORKS?!?
The post-book of Acts church has confused this issue. God is not the author of confusion. Let's clear this up with the scriptures…
If Target announced they were giving away a FREE gift to everyone who arrived at their store at 9:00am Sunday morning, would you go?
That might depend on if you WANT the gift, and second if you BELIEVE their offer, and third if you are ABLE to RESPOND.
If you did, and received the gift, you could tell everyone it was FREE, that you didn't have to WORK to receive the gift. It may have GREAT VALUE. It could be so valuable that it would be beyond your ABILITY to PURCHASE it. It may be SO VALUABLE that even if you worked ALL your LIFE, you could still not earn enough money to AFFORD it.
All that being said, did you have to DO ANYTHING to receive this valuable, FREE GIFT??
Well, yes! You had to HEAR about the offer. You had to BELIEVE in the credibility of the offer. You had to ACT on the offer, by SHOWING UP at the particular store LOCATION at the particular TIME. You had to IDENTIFY yourself as a CANDIDATE to receive the FREE GIFT. You had to RECEIVE, or take possession of the FREE GIFT. And finally, you had to go HOME with your GIFT.
Did you WORK for the gift? Well, not in the traditional, or truest sense of the word WORK, as in EARNING, or DESERVING it; but, that certainly doesn't mean you didn't have to do ANYTHING to RECEIVE it.
So it is with our SALVATION.
CALVARY purchased our REDEMPTION from the WAGES of SIN, which is Death. We could not AFFORD to do this for ourselves, we certainly don't DESERVE it, but we still must AVAIL ourselves of this 'FREE' GIFT of SALVATION to OBTAIN it…
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should PERISH, but that all should COME to REPENTANCE.
THOSE who say we don't do anything about our own salvation are WRONG!!
This verse says we must COME to REPENTANCE.
> 2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly SORROW worketh REPENTANCE to SALVATION …
> Proverbs 28:13 Whoso CONFESSETH & FORSAKETH them shall have MERCY.
> Romans 10:10 For with the HEART man BELIEVETH unto RIGHTEOUSNESS; and with the MOUTH CONFESSION is made unto SALVATION.
Knowing that a man is not justified by the WORKS of the LAW, but by the FAITH of Jesus Christ, even we have BELIEVED in Jesus Christ, that we might be JUSTIFIED by the FAITH of Christ, and not by the WORKS of the LAW: for by the WORKS of the LAW shall no flesh be justified.
So, we are not saved by WORKS of the LAW.
Not by WORKS of RIGHTEOUSNESS which we have DONE, but according to his MERCY he SAVED us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
And, we are not saved by WORKS of our own RIGHTEOUSNESS.
1 Peter 1:2
Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto OBEDIENCE and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: GRACE unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
But, we ARE saved by OBEDIENCE to the Gospel (death, burial, resurrection of Christ)!!!
The answer to the question in Acts 2:37 "WHAT SHALL (MUST) WE DO??" is the completed work of CALVARY —
Then PETER said unto them, REPENT, and be BAPTIZED every one of you in the NAME of Jesus Christ for the REMISSION of sins, and ye shall RECEIVE the GIFT of the Holy Ghost.
This was the Fulfillment of Luke 24:47
"And that REPENTANCE and REMISSION of sins should be PREACHED in his NAME among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."
Now, our sins can be FORGOTTEN, buried in the BLOOD of Christ, NEVER to be Remembered AGAINST us again!!!
And their sins and iniquities will I REMEMBER NO MORE.
Now where REMISSION of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if any man be IN Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, ALL THINGS are become NEW.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made HIM to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God in HIM.
BURIED with him in BAPTISM, wherein also ye are RISEN with him through the FAITH of the OPERATION of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
JESUS said, "Except a man be BORN of WATER and of the SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God." "Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye MUST be BORN AGAIN." (John 3:5, 7)
PAUL said, "Therefore we are BURIED with him by BAPTISM into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should WALK in NEWNESS of LIFE." (Romans 6:4)
Salvation IS a FREE GIFT, purchased by the blood of Christ on Calvary, but there IS something WE must DO to obtain it.
#1 – We must HEAR. (Romans 10:14)
#2 – We must BELIEVE. (Hebrews 11:6)
#3 – We must REPENT. (2 Peter 3:9)
#4 – We must be BAPTIZED. (Mark 16:16)
#5 – We must be FILLED with the HOLY GHOST. (Romans 8:9)
#6 – We must WALK in NEW LIFE. (Romans 8:1)
#7 – We must LOVE, LOOK, and be READY for His return. (2 Timothy 4:8)
